California cannot replant forests fast enough, report says
Machine summary A CalMatters report published by KPBS says California is not replanting forests quickly enough to match severe wildfires, citing a working draft of a state reforestation strategy. That draft says high-severity fires burned 2.3 million acres of forestland over the past quarter century so severely that trees probably will not regrow by themselves, and Cal Fire estimates seed bank capacity would need to rise by roughly 300% to replant a quarter of private forestlands. The report also says California would need a 35% annual increase in reforestation to meet goals starting at 280,000 acres a year in 2030, while the draft strategy has no dedicated funding.
- Cal Fire's Lewis A. Moran Reforestation Center in Davis holds about 42,000 pounds of seeds, some more than a half-century old, according to the report
- A working draft of California's new reforestation strategy obtained by CalMatters says high-severity wildfires burned 2.3 million acres of California forestland over the past quarter century so completely that trees are unlikely to return on their own
- One recent analysis reports that by 2071, half of California's forest area could be gone
