Machine summary The All India Railwaymen's Federation has written to the 8th pay commission after meeting the panel during its Mumbai visit, restating demands for railway employees. - The All India Railwaymen's Federation wrote to the 8th pay commission after meeting the panel during its Mumbai visit, setting out demands for railway employees, Livemint reported.
- The letter says the meeting covered four areas in order: general issues such as minimum wage and railway-specific allowances, loco and traffic running staff, track maintainers and allied P. Way staff, and technicians across railway departments.
- AIRF sought higher pay scales, arguing that employees who maintain or operate assets such as rolling stock, signalling and track should be placed as skilled workers, citing working conditions and modernisation.
- AIRF asked that railway employees across categories be considered for "Special Allowances", which it identifies as Risk & Hardship Allowance and Hazard pay, citing casualties and grievous injuries sustained in the course of employment.
- The letter states that Indian Railways cannot be compared with any other Union Government department because it operates 24X7 through the year in all weathers and in distinct geographical and environmental conditions.

Court requires witness evidence in staff disciplinary inquiries
Machine summary The Supreme Court of India held on April 1, 2026 that a departmental inquiry against a government employee must proceed unless the employee admits the charges. In the case before it, the employer produced no witnesses despite the employee's denial, and the court set aside the punishment or recovery order and ordered a fresh inquiry.
- The Supreme Court of India judgment dated April 1, 2026, cited as 2026 INSC 305, held that an inquiry into allegations must take place unless the employee explicitly admits guilt.
- Because the inquiry was vitiated, the court held the resulting punishment or recovery order could not be upheld and ordered a fresh inquiry following all the rules.
- The court said the department must first present evidence against the charged employee and give him a chance to question those witnesses, before he is asked whether he wants to present evidence or an explanation.
- In cases resting only on documentary evidence, the court said that unless the employee admits the documents, a witness must be examined to prove them and then tendered for cross-examination.
