What happened?
- On October 15, 2026 Anthropic announced it is working with the nonprofits METR and SecureBio as embedded independent evaluators and is in discussions with additional organizations, including Hugging Face.
- METR is a third-tier evaluator: six of its researchers hold Anthropic-issued laptops, office space and internal tools, and METR can publish assessments without Anthropic's approval, subject to redactions in categories defined in advance covering customer data, attorney-client privileged material and model-architecture information.
- In late September, President Donald Trump presented a voluntary accord urging AI firms to partner with independent outside auditors or evaluators, and Dario Amodei, Anthropic's CEO, added his signature, so too did senior leaders from Google, Meta, OpenAI, SpaceX and Nvidia.
Anthropic said on October 15, 2026 that it is working with the nonprofits METR and SecureBio to embed independent evaluators inside the company, and that six METR researchers now have employee-level access to internal tools and workspaces. METR can publish its own assessments without Anthropic's approval, while the company can require redactions in categories defined in advance, including customer data, attorney-client privileged material and model-architecture details.
