SAR satellites detect mm-scale glacier shifts in Xizang
Machine summary SAR and InSAR monitoring is tracking glacier deformation and barrier lakes after an Aug. 26 mudslide near Gyirong Port.
- Spacety operates three Synthetic Aperture Radar satellites, and these spacecraft are supplying the rescue command center in Shigatse's Gyirong county with updated imagery.
- The satellites have monitored two barrier lakes and assessed damage to National Highway G216 following the Aug. 26 mudslide.
- Upstream of Gyirong Port lies the glacier area, which is the newest monitoring target; crews are looking for surface shifts and cracks that might indicate additional hazards.
- InSAR technology detects ground movement at the millimeter-to-centimeter scale across large areas without requiring ground-based monitoring equipment.
- SAR can operate at night and penetrate clouds and rain, making it effective in Gyirong's mountainous terrain.
