Microsoft executives call for "emergency brakes" on AI models
Machine summary Microsoft president Brad Smith said companies need "emergency brakes", also known as "kill switches", to pause or slow AI if it grew out of control, and chief executive Satya Nadella wrote on Saturday that AI models should have an "emergency brake", The Guardian reported. Warnings issued by Anthropic, Google DeepMind and OpenAI, cautioning that AI development ought to slow, preceded the remarks.
- Brad Smith told the BBC that "your washing machine is subject to more safety rules than AI" and that every carton of milk in a grocery store is subject to safety rules and inspection.
- Smith called for companies to have "emergency brakes", also known as "kill switches", to pause or slow AI if it grew out of control, The Guardian reported.
- Smith proposed a legal obligation to a "victim" if their system was breached by rogue AI agents, according to the reports.
- Satya Nadella wrote on Saturday that AI models should have an "emergency brake", saying super intelligence cannot be treated as a set of nested black boxes.
- The Guardian reported that Microsoft operates AI infrastructure and is a shareholder in OpenAI, the ChatGPT owner, and is led by chief executive Satya Nadella.

Anthropic reports progress on blocking model distillation attacks
Machine summary Anthropic says distillation lets firms replicate frontier capability for a fraction of the development time and cost, and alleges that Zhipu distilled cyber capabilities of leading US models during GLM-5.3 development; Zhipu did not respond.
- Anthropic says its new methods cut data harvested by distillation attacks on Claude by around 90 to 99 percent, based on early evidence (Anthropic research post, 2026-10-12)
- Anthropic states Zhipu distilled cyber capabilities of leading US models while developing GLM-5.3 and attempted to distill Claude Fable 5 before switching models after Claude's cyber safeguards degraded its attacks, an account the cluster carries without a Zhipu response
- Anthropic says its own research found GLM-5.3 safeguards can easily be bypassed and that the model will develop security exploits end-to-end
- Anthropic wrote in September that distillation has been used extensively to help overseas AI labs keep pace with US companies
